Footwear pressure and nerve pain: small changes that matter

Footwear that feels comfortable can still compress a nerve. The fix is often a tiny adjustment in lacing and fit.

The top-of-foot pinch point

The deep peroneal nerve runs close to the top of the foot. Tight laces or stiff uppers can create a constant pressure point.

Try a skip-lace pattern

Skip one or two eyelets near the most sensitive area. This reduces pressure without making the shoe loose.

Socks should cushion, not compress

Choose a breathable sock with light padding. Avoid tight elastic bands that squeeze the ankle or calf.

Short walks beat long slogs

If pain is mechanical, short movement bursts are better than one long walk. It keeps circulation moving without overloading the nerve tunnel.
